Here at Church of the Open Door, our goal is to "present everyone mature in Christ" (Col. 1.29), and that includes our young people. Rather than being an "entertainment-driven" youth ministry, ours is one that is focused primarily on studying, understanding, and applying God's Word in a relevant way to the lives of teens. In an increasingly pluralistic society like ours, it is important for young people to learn how to "approve what is excellent" (Phil. 1.10) by teaching to them base truth on the perfect standard of truth--the Bible. Therefore, our youth ministry seeks to partner with parents to help them train up their children in the faith by providing solid Bible teaching and opportunities for peer fellowship each week.
The main youth ministry activity happens each Wednesday evening. We sing together at 6:15pm in the sanctuary and then split up into the Jr. High and High School groups for Bible Study. The Jr. High group studies the Awana Trek material each week, growing in their knowledge of the basics of the faith and learning how to live in light of the gospel. They fill out their Trek workbooks each week and spend time memorizing and reciting their memory verses. The High School group uses the Awana Journey material as a starting point to study God's Word one book at a time, learning how to apply the truths they learn to their lives. The Journey workbook is optional for the High Schoolers, but time is provided each week for those students who desire to go farther in their study by completing and reporting on the workbook.
In addition to our weekly meetings, we have monthly events that rotate between training events (conferences), parent/youth fellowship events, outreach events, and youth fellowship events. We also encourage all of our youth to serve the local church through signing up to help with the various ministries the church provides. All of these things are focused on building the church by helping each student become more like Christ.
Visitors are always welcome, so please come join us as we seek to grow in the faith together.
